Introduction
The pediatric oncology unit in India was set up at cancer institute in 1960. Cancer institute has been a pioneer in management of pediatric cancers in India. The division of pediatric oncology is a part of medical oncology department and it sees 250 new patients every year. There are more than 4000 childhood cancer patients on follow up.
State of the art treatment is provided to children at cancer institute. These include high dose Chemotherapy, stem cell therapy, limb salvage for done tumours, and precision guided radio therapy.
The Mahesh memorial pediatric ward is an independent building with 55 beds of pediatric patients. The ward has 9 bedded fully functional ICU for managing critically ill children. There is also a fully equipped procedure room with anesthetic equipment to do pain free procedure in children.
At Cancer institute children are treated with holistic care that includes medical treatment, psycho social support, nutritional support, continuous education, art and play therapy. Numerous organizations like MAHESH MEMORIAL TRUST, JEEVADAYA TRUST and CAN KIDS are actually involved with the activities of pediatric ward.
