Introduction

The Department of Medical Oncology at Cancer Institute (W.I.A) has an illustrious history. The postgraduate specialty of Medical Oncology in India was initiated first at the Cancer Institute when Medical Council approved India’s first DM Medical Oncology course in 1984. Over the last few decades, the specialty of Medical Oncology has grown leaps and bounds with the introduction of new chemotherapy drugs, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies.

Services

The Medical Oncology department at the Institute has the following main divisions.

The department runs a dedicated 75-bed state-of-the-art daycare facility at Dr. Shanta campus. The daycare facility helps patient receive their chemotherapy seamlessly. Patients can return home the same day after receiving chemotherapy at the daycare.

The newly inaugurated bone marrow and stem cell transplant unit in the Diamond Jubilee building has nine beds. The unit also has a dialysis facility. About 70 bone marrow transplantation is conducted every year. The transplants include autologous (from the same person, matched sibling (from brother or sister), matched unrelated donor, or haploidentical (from father or mother).

The Mahesh Memorial Pediatric Oncology ward is a 75-bed hospital dedicated to treating children (less than 18 years) with cancer. The ward is located on Dr. Shanta campus. It includes a pediatric emergency, six-bed daycare, and 6-bed intensive care unit. There is a play area, dining hall, library, Montessori school, and park for the children’s well-being.    

The department has a 4-bed intensive care unit (ICU), procedure room, 24 beds for males, and 18 beds for females in the general ward. A dedicated 12-bed adult leukemia ward and ten-bed ICU are under construction. Special ward beds are available in Patel block, Maduram Narayan block, and Diamond Jubliee building.

Research Activities

The Medical Oncology department has a strong research focus. The department has numerous completed and ongoing investigator-initiated and regulatory trials. Research performed by the department has been practice-changing nationally and internationally. Faculty and students have received multiple awards for their research work.

 

Academic/education Activities – Students, Courses/training Programs Conducted Routinely

The department runs the National Medical Council (NMC) approved DM Medical Oncology super-specialty course. Each year six students are enrolled in the course. Selection is made through the NEET super-specialty exam and centralized counseling. The DM students have structured clinical postings and academic programs. Students are encouraged to pursue research during their training. They participate in various interdepartmental multi-specialty boards. The department Alumni are heading various cancer centers across the country.
