The Cancer Institute (W.I.A) aka Adyar Cancer Institute is a public charitable voluntary not-for-profit institution that is dedicated to the service of cancer patients since 1954. It is a Regional Centre for Cancer Research and Treatment and recognized as the State Cancer Institute, the apex body. We are pioneers in cancer care from prevention to palliation, offering ethical and state-of-the -art multi-modality treatment. The care is free or heavily subsidised or paid for, as needed. We assure our patients the best possible treatment, creating trust and hope.
The Institute is a comprehensive cancer centre with a 545 in-patient beds hospital, a research division, a college of oncological sciences and a division of preventive oncology.
The Molecular Oncology Department is a Centre of Excellence designated by Dept of Science and Technology, Govt. of India Of the hospital beds, only 35% are paying beds. Of the rest, about half pay a very nominal amount and the remaining patients are boarded, lodged and treated free of cost.
Besides the medical facilities in the 2 campuses in Adyar, Chennai, the other services of Adyar Cancer Institute includes one free hospice Mahaveer Ashray at Sriperumbudur in Kanchipuram district; outreach cancer prevention/screening operations in 6 other districts and a population-based cancer registry surveillance of entire Tamil Nadu.
Annually, about 15,000 new patients and 150,000 follow up patients are managed at the Institute.
